When does our forum rules become friction?

In the past (and even nowadays), I've seen many forum owners rule their communities with an iron fist. They're quick to lock topics, warn members in public, and take action. Sometimes, I wonder if many of these people just love having the power to do these things and want to use the moderation features anytime they can. I also see forums add moderators who share those same traits. It's one of the reasons why I'm so unexcited to add a moderator most of the time because I'm not sure how strict they plan to be.

How do you all feel about this and where do you stand in this equation? Over you an over-moderator?

From my experience, forum owners ruling their communities with an iron fist is only going to result to one thing in the end which is members developing so much hate for the community and eventually leaving in the end.

A forum is supposed to treat members as family or else it's going to become a toxic environment which nothing thrives.

You nailed it with this response. At least, IMO and in my experience, that is how we should treat forum members.

But even in a family, when some members are mean and won't change, you have to shun them (ban them) from the family.

But love should be the biggest feeling.

If I feel loved on your community, I'm going to keep coming back.
