Are Niche Forums Dead in the Age of Reddit and Facebook Groups?

They definitely exist... I am one of those. When you pay your people/team, you can require few things, that's how life works. Like any business does with their employees. The more you pay, the more you can require.
I can see removing/demoting staff that does not participate, especially if paid. But for users, a user account does not take up that much space in the database so I personally see no reason to be "pruning" them.
But again... each admin does as they deem necessary for their site. I just don't see a need to be removing users that may come back later and actually start participating as the storage for users are not that big of an issue.

I've never been a fan of member pruning on forums...

However, I do prune (or rather move to an inactive group) subscribers on one of my newsletters who haven't opened any of my emails within the past 6 months. I have to pay a monthly fee for xx-amount of subscribers now. I work with sponsors and I make more than I pay but still, I don't want to pay for those not opening emails.

I'll let them sit in limbo for a few months and then send a final come back email before purging their email altogether.
