How do you all feel about the tactic of requiring new forum members to introduce themselves to the rest of the community?

You could make it to where new user groups could only post on the introduction board and then be approved to post in the rest of the community after that. I've seen some forums do this to mitigate spam but also to try to get people to be active, as well.

How do you feel about the practice? Why or why would you not do this on your forum?

Forcing members into something they don’t want to do usually backfires. A better approach is to guide them with a gentle nudge - like a dismissible message at the top of the page. Something simple that gives onboarding advice and points them toward making an introduction, without being pushy or annoying.

I agree with all the above.

I don't think it should be forced. I'm a member on a few forums that do require it. They claim it's an anti-spam thing, but those forums are also very filled with all sorts of rules that IMO takes away from a community building effort.
