I posted on a few forums where I regularly build links. I usually make a promo post on social media every few days. I also followed people, and added more friends on Facebook related to my niche.
Most of the time I spend online is on my forum, even if I'm not posting I like to monitor my site.
I try to respond to most discussions to keep the content flowing.
I mostly design my own graphics. I enjoy messing around in Photoshop until I come up with something I like.
I usually pay for logos, or graphics that require an artists touch, because I don't have drawing skills.
I knew how to code before I started a forum. I still need to learn how to create add-ons for Xenforo, because I have some ideas on how I want to expand my forum, so in that sense I'm forced to expand my programming knowledge, because I own a forum.
I use most social media platforms to build links, and to reach out to more members. I'm on Facebook, X, and recently started using Bluesky. I also have threads, and Instagram that I use less often.
I think you should pick a niche you enjoy, regardless of the competition. If you're passionate about the topics you post, you'll add much more value to your forum.
I try to reply to all/most topics whenever I can add anything to the discussion, and I like to create a thread or two each day.
How often do you usually post on your forums?
@Shawn Gossman There are only a few good admin forums. I don't think the admin niche is over saturated. TAZ stinks, and the only other admin forum which is decently active is FP. This niche can definitely use another good forum or two.
My niche is "poker" I believe is over saturated a bit, my...
I don't think it really matters if a forum software is "well-known" or not, but rather how you customize it to suit the needs of your users.
With that being said, I don't know any less known forum softwares I'd consider using.
I had a staff member on my old Facebook group scam a few members. Obviously I banned them, but I also took some backlash for not doing it sooner. I needed proof before taking action.
That is true I suppose. However if you choose a .ca or .us domain for example, you'll be limited to search engine traffic from those countries. I'll always prefer TLDs because the algorithm is always changing.
We have a freeroll every weekend on on StockPoker where players come to the forums to get the password to our game, and can win real money. Sometimes I place a bounty on my head too, so if players eliminate me, they can collect the bounty prize.
I don't think I'll have that issue with my site as it's a one word domain with the . community extension, but I can see your point. I usually don't buy domains if the .com isn't available.
How much do you post on your own forum each day? Do you believe forum admins should be active daily to grow a forum?
I like to make a minimum of 1 topic per day, and I reply to threads whenever I can, or if I have anything I can add to the discussions.
It took me 3-4 months to reach 100 members. My forum is currently at 158 members. I think the most new members I received in one day was 7. I get more members when I'm running a promotion.
