I didn't know people did that. I would never think about buying links. I do know in days of Dmoz editors used to sell listings. They were caught and let go. It still happened.
I don't think it was. Nothing new was being added and the old stuff was well old.
vBulletin pushed out the devs with 5.0. The few that remained didn't make many addons. The theme designers started to through together cookie cutter themes just to make money.
That's new from Adsense. I have them turned off. I did use them when they were in beta. They show up when you click any link once you're on the site. They do make money.
The guy that thought of that was a marketing genius. There were many knockoffs. Someone even made a script to create your own. Like every fad the first is always the best.
I always prefered IPB. Moved off vbulletin after IB bought it. I switched to xenforo after an IPB support person told me they don't support my server config. I didn't want to. I didn't want to blown off either. They later apologized. I was already in process of moving the sites. Now I'm going...
Extreme Visual Basic Forum was my first and in it's heyday it was the top in it's field.
2001 version after I imported the posts from the hacked up quest book script I created when i originally opened Extreme VB.

If you enjoy creating them then no amount is too many. I think I have 11 right now. The original xTreme .Net Talk isn't what it used to be. I keep it online anyway.
I am in the process of merging my tech sites, I have 5, into 1. When done I will be doing the same with my 3 off topic forums...
Adwords works. I used it in the past and it did very well getting new users signed up. The Google algorithm has a way to get visitors to your site that are interested in your content.
I haven't used it since I re-opened the sites. I will once I get the consolidation of sites complete.
Funny you ask this. I did an experiment years back. I called the final result the Twitter effect. I posted the experiment and the results on my blog. I think it is still there buried in the depths.
Long story short in any case I found that if you post a link to your site on Twitter you will...
I always had dedicated server. If the sites needed more resources I'd order more ram.
I had a VPS once, don't remember who it was with, and they would shut me down because the site used too many resources or bandwidth.
That's a name I haven't heard in a while. Great guy and knows forums. Dilip is no longer on IPB with his Indian tech Support Forum? He changed from vbulletin years ago.
The person I sold the site too reneged on the last payment so I took it back. They did that. Since they did it and I like it I am doing it on my other tech sites. In the end all tech sites will be combined into one. I am in the process of doing this on Free PC Help Forum at present.
