I left xenforo for other reasons. Price wasn't one of them. As you said everything goes up. I wanted to take my sites in a direction where they are more than forums and didn't want to rely on addons to do it.
I did a couple times. I started Extreme Tech Support after I sold my visual basic programming forum. Everyone called it ExTS for short so I changed the domain to exts.com. Got sick and lost the domain. Came back and extremetechsupport.com was available so I switched back to it.
Good tips. I'm going through reviving a community. The main thing for me is to assure the members when they come back that the site won't close like it did. Have to rebuild the trust.
On a new site I'm working on I will have a pay per post system in place. Users will get paid to post. It won't make them rich. It will give incentive to join and be active.
I had an off topic forum that had a pay to post area. Topics in the area earned credits that could be converted to cash...

The servers were all dual Xeons with 256G ram.
Today I have 1 server that runs 3 Windows 2022 VM's and 1...
If they use ad blockers that's fine. I use one. If I come across a site that tells me to turn mine off I leave the site. What I seek can be found elsewhere.
Never. I'm not in it to make money. I'm in it because I enjoy building things. I am a retired structural engineer and while I don't build roads and bridges any longer I can build forums.
Anyone that uses them takes a risk. You don't know what they hid in there when they nulled the software.
While I don't condone using nulled software I do understand why people do it. Some can't afford the price tag on the software.
I didn't realize they had a price increase. I have 15 licenses that I bought over the years. Last one I bought was $140. I know renewals went up from $40 to $60.
Is it worth the money. I don't think so. You get a license for forum only. If you want to add extras it's more money. If you want to...
