Do any of you not care about mobile users?

Some of it will be due to XF coding. But generally, most of those testing sites are targeted towards a more static content and not a forum style format. And yes, it does have some to do with how the software itself is coded. XF has made some strides in trying to optimize the speed of the...

    Is free forum software dying?

Pretty sure the big issue is that it pulls them from a GIT repository. But NodeBB does the same thing, it just uses NPM to do it and it is easy enough to run npm install put_plugin_name_here. It seems that you cannot add users from the ACP in discourse either. Kind of a weird deal in case you...

    Is free forum software dying?

I'm currently evaluating Discourse on Edge & Steel (a new site I am working on). And honestly, when compared to NodeBB, it is a lot more problematic. That is even with setting up a dedicated VPS running Ubuntu 24.04LTS and docker for it. So far, I'm not honestly that impressed. Installing...

Do any of you not care about mobile users?

Maybe they need to actually spend more time in improving the end user benefits and not so much what occurs on the back end that is more admin related? I realize that is a "strange and disconcerting" thought to the XF developers as they are seem to be fixated on things that bring the end users of...

Do any of you not care about mobile users?

Honestly.. for my niche, most of my users are desktop/laptop followed by mobile and then tablet. When it comes down to it mobile (cell or tablet) is by far the minority of users that access the site. So I'm a firm believer in targeting what your primary audience partakes from. Granted...

    Not upgrading

In some aspects, upgrading to 2.3 from 2.2.17 was a real PITA as they did change many aspects of the FA offerings, especially due to the variable theme style. The sad thing is, for me, the XenForo script itself has not brought forth any major improvements that made me want to upgrade. As I...

    Not upgrading

The only reason I upgraded my XF install was the opposite of this. Several of the major add-ons that I use were updated and added some features I wanted access to. But you had to be running XenForo 2.3 to use them. Otherwise, I would probably be still on 2.2.17 like the site I help on is.

    Other Chrono Collectors

A small site for those that are into watch and clock collecting, repairs and building to get together to discuss their love of timekeeping instrumentation. Topics of interest range from sundials, water clocks up to the latest smart watches.

    Whois privacy

With CF (and I think even NameSilo when I was with them) you have to specifically disable it as it was a default offering (no additional charge) except on a few specific domains where it is prohibited (the .US being one of them).

Why run a BBS via the internet?

I had a lot more fun running the BBS's than I do with websites. And generally the users were a different breed than users today,

Why run a BBS via the internet?

But there is still a significant number of users that would argue that point, especially when considering the niche. The question remains... are there enough of us old shits still playing on the internet that might want to "flash back" to our origins? Personally.. I would have no issues with...

Why run a BBS via the internet?

Cellular/mobile "gaming" will quickly argue that point. There are other offerings/ability beyond flash. Could it involve downloading bespoke code to use? Sure.. but where is the pursuit of that aspect? Remember... those pursuits back then were not that much different than the "needs" of today...

Why run a BBS via the internet?

But what was that reason? Was it because it was "too much trouble to implement" and providers stopped offering that ability or because users didn't want to use it. I would argue that it was the former. Hell, look at the current impact of gaming on phones. I'd argue once more it was more the...

Why run a BBS via the internet?

It's really not hard to evolve from 1980's tech. The sad thing is, several things offered via BBS sites cannot be easily duplicated on current sites. Hell, way back then we had a form of "federation" that allowed interaction on sites across the world from one site to another without logging...

Why run a BBS via the internet?

A web browser tab screenshot that allows access to an old fashioned BBS from a good old fashioned browser and not a telnet app/program. It's what you see when you click on that internet link above it. ;) You can either use it that way, or use the Home/Forum/Files links. When logged in...

Why run a BBS via the internet?

As an example - and yes, it's still being played with as I learn it. https://bbs.redneckhost.com/ If you notice, you can actually log in from the web using using telnet link.

Why run a BBS via the internet?

If there was "no interest", it's doubtful that the developers would continue to code for it. That's like asking why folks will set up ham radios when a cell phone can do more. ;) Synchronet, which I am currently playing with appears to also have a built in web server for it, so it may be...

Why run a BBS via the internet?

Gaining new knowledge is never a waste of time, especially when it can be used to generate content for a site. I am debating between Synchronet BBS and Mystic BBS after I'm through playing with WWIV. I had forgotten why I disliked WWIV so much during the BBS days and why I settled on Maximus/2...

Why run a BBS via the internet?

Boy, I forgot what a PITA setting up discussion areas in the old BBS software was. The internet based stuff has pushed way past back then.
