Why run a BBS via the internet?

Sure... let's give it a try. I like to go back to my roots! So, I grabbed a new VPS from Contabo (they are cheap and easily spun up) to give a try at running an old fashioned BBS via the Internet. Currently I'm playing with WWIV, which back in the day was one of the "big" paid offerings. No...

    What did you drink last?

I'd love to get it at that price now. Last one I purchased was $99.99 (about 2 years ago), but now the ones I have seen in the recent past are around $130. Our local Zipp's had a few different bottles in on their "hard to find" aisle that they charge appropriately for. Since it is a 4 times a...

    What did you drink last?

A small pour of Remus Repeal Series VIII (2024 Medley) that I found at one of our local stores. Last bottle that they had, and it's delicious.

IPv6 - not using it, maybe you should?

Yes, it can be a hassle to set up on a VPS or dedicated server (can't comment on shared since I don't use that option). But if you do not have IPv6 configured on your site, you may be missing visitors. The exception will be if you use CloudFlare because you can map IPv6 inbound to an IPv4...

Telling people to search for the answer

As the admin/staff of a site, I agree, you have a duty to try to help. And that CAN be by simply putting a link for the user to search with the query already done and encouraging that user to actually do research themselves instead of expecting to have it handed to them on a platter. And...

Telling people to search for the answer

If it is a question that I have seen asked over and over and over and answered over and over and over, then yes, I have no problems with telling someone to perform a search for it. I will also mention that it has been asked and answered numerous times. Is that talking down? Some may think so...

Forum Feedback AAF is really slow to respond

CentMin is far from stuck on "old offerings". That reference was based upon Apache and even nginx and some peoples reliance of modsecurity. Now more and more people are wanting you to pay them money for rulesets. It is no longer officially supported for nginx (and I really don't care a whit...

Forum Feedback AAF is really slow to respond

It does offer some protections... but you can get similar from any WAF. For nginx, it is no longer supported natively "offically". It helps prevent layer 7 attacks and a few other things, but it is a real pain in the ass to deal with. If you are using CloudFlare and have their WAF enabled, you...

Forum Feedback AAF is really slow to respond

Ahhh... the benefit of using Cloudflare and their WAF. https://developers.cloudflare.com/waf/managed-rules/reference/owasp-core-ruleset/

Forum Feedback AAF is really slow to respond

Mod security can cause headaches with almost any script. You have to be able to check the logs and find where it may be conflicting. Honestly I have not used mod security in ages on any of my sites.

What did you do to promote your forum today?

Not a whole lot honestly. Been doing captures and working on a special project for a few of the sites. Give you one guess what is in the planning stages. And you only have 3 choices. :ROFLMAO:

Has anyone got 1 million posts yet?

That's happening to a lot of admin sites though. I'm getting where I am less and less inclined to visit them since I'm not in it for the money and have more interest in reading more technical aspects of the hobby. Me, I don't get many posts.. but it is nice to be known as the primary...

Do any forum software compare to Xenforo?

Again, you are reading into it what you want to see. What I am saying is that a FORUM ONLY site will usually not succeed with todays internet user. I don't care if it's Xenforo, Invision, Woltlab, NodeBB, SMF, myBB, phpBB or whatever. The users are looking now for a different experience and a...

Do any forum software compare to Xenforo?

No, you ASS-UME that I made that point. I simply pointed out the fallacy that a script that offers little to what is needed in todays environment of users does not equate to what it costs to make the two on equal footing. You make an assumption that I claim one is better than the other. I...

Do any forum software compare to Xenforo?

And that is the point. What works for one might not work for another. The admin needs to look at the overall requirements of the site, then look at what softare (and/or add-ons) meets those needs. Way to often we have cult members of every script stripe touting theirs is the best, but when...

Do any forum software compare to Xenforo?

No, you have to draw the traffic in before the content becomes king. If you don't give the users what they want, they aren't going to participate. You can't hold a gun to their head and force them to as much as you might wish you could. Hell, my Astro site gets a LOT of traffic to it. Mainly...

Do any forum software compare to Xenforo?

Really? Remind us.. when was IGNBoards started? Pretty sure it was around 1996... when is the EXACT period that I commented about when forums were easy to start. Once you have traction, maintaining it is fairly easy. Care to give us a few examples from 2022, 2023 or 2024 that compare. I...

Do any forum software compare to Xenforo?

Still equates to a minimal number. But ahead and try to defend Xenforo. In fact, YOUR stats point even MORE to why isn't XF doing more than it is if hey are bigger than Invision in licenses sold and all the other crap you are trying to promulgate. If they are that successful monetarily, why...

Do any forum software compare to Xenforo?

Wow... a WHOLE 2%. Again... being that "close" and one company being able to have more developers and advance their script the way they have and another not... has to make one wonder doesn't it. Especially when you see none of the signs of "impending doom" that you want to infer. :sneaky...

Do any forum software compare to Xenforo?

Usually latest means the most recent. ;) And to do that, you have to use the latest (most recent) Xenforo. Bob does not backdate updates/new features into older versions. And currently his add-ons are the most comprehensive that will get Xenforo onto par with what can be done by the Invision...
