For EggsNearby, I plan some time next year to make an LLC and make an aggressive advertising campaign (locally to conquer one area/city at a time). It's easier when backed up with a legal entity to be able to promote it everywhere. But I plan to make it "the place to go" about farm related stuff...
Well, this has been an experience of its kind.
I originally put that forum for actually testing my own programs/scripts. It was never intended for regular users. It was mainly for admins to demonstrate how my scripts work and offer support for them. I was mainly focused into helping other forums...
It's the forum and it's environment. It's something we build little by little and we have control over it. The contrary with FB or FB groups. You have no sense of ownership and your account can be wiped out any day.( I would be scared to build a business based on FB without pulling my clients to...
Many of us, including myself. We start a forum without much thought. And I am glad it is like that, otherwise one would get
action-paralysis.
I believe in progression, things change over time and it takes it's natural course of life.
As mentioned by @AWS, many times the hard part it's just to...
One of my business is mainly for locals (FerranosFarm .com ) It redirects to my farm page. And due to much scams, I started EggsNearby .com (a classified site for farmers and Homesteaders)
I don't know much about LinkedIn, but I perceive it more for "online" business?
I did use vBulletin 4 back in the days, then I started testing xenForo.
xenForo was very new, but it met all what I needed.
I have played a little bit with other free forums software, but never used them as an actual live forum, mostly to learn a little bit.
So no, I don't have experience...
Sometimes I do post more and other days I post less. If I am busy coding, I can't really be posting much but I like to be logged in in case
something requires my attention. One thing I like is to be attending the threads I post and respond as soon as possible, many times within minutes.
I had an experience that I would like to tell. It's related to extensions....
A couple of years ago, I was working on a project but I couldn't get the .com. So I went and I got the .org
So, I did find myself, the creator of the project typing the .com version instead the .org. From that moment...
- I used to have Premium Membership plans, but I recently changed my forum model to paid members only.
- I offer to members opportunities to make money by participating in contests, by posting, by referring while they help me to develop some projects I am running.
- I started all free for some...
I used to buy them all too long time ago. Now I just buy the .com. Sometimes I get the singular/plural of the name and any possible easy misspelling.
But I stopped buying other extensions to develop my projects.
I really don't like to use none of them. I use FB for my business, but not much for personal use. It's so full of scammers that I find it difficult to make business.
I spend more time screening out the bad actors than the actual clients I get. (it has been a big waste of time for me)
