Is Open-Source Forum Software (like phpBB or MyBB) Actually Holding Forums Back?

I don't think so. People use the free scripts for a reason.. usually because they can't afford to go to a paid script. So if there are no more free offerings, many would most likely just not set up a site using a forum format.

Is XenForo Really Worth the Price

That was one of the things I found so attractive with Invision... before you had to buy their package deal. I believe Woltlab is the same way, you have a core and then start stacking components on top of it. Some of those might require the forum portion to have certain abilities work.

Is Open-Source Forum Software (like phpBB or MyBB) Actually Holding Forums Back?

Discourse and NodeBB are progressive and offer features that some of the paid options have not even contemplated. Now, if you are referring to older style forums formats that have basically been around since the 2000's then they really don't have a lot of influence on the development process of...

Is XenForo Really Worth the Price

If you like XF and have the money then it's worth it. As a forum offering it remains one of the cheaper ones available and has a renewal policy that is license holder friendly. But this can also be a negative if the developers are not adding features and functions regularly to their script...

    Worst VPS/DS Experience?

I have to agree with @Cpvr. I generally research a hosting provider (VPS or dedicated) heavily before I decide to go with it, and if they happen to get bought out by EIG start quickly looking for another to replace them. EIG=KOD (kiss of death).

Was looking at buying XF site back from friend.. but

I have to agree. And that is why on my astro site I originally targeted as a resource for other types of content that do get quite a bit of traffic.

I've been trying to be a good boy.. but

Sorry... for me (and apparently Opus X from what he has said) I never got ANY kind of notification prior to ban... either via message in a thread, DM or built in process. I have previously posted the headers of ALL DM's and notices around the time that my process happened over there that I...

    Using Two Domains

Yeah, that was why that multi-domain/site add-on for Xenforo was made and was popular for awhile.

I've been trying to be a good boy.. but

There does come a time when you have to stand up on your own two feet and say enough is enough. https://xenforohelp.com/topic/56/warnings.-are-they-that-shitty-under-xenforo

That becomes the problem... that is just ONE add-on. When you have 5-10 that put theirs in there it becomes very ugly looking. But that is also why I don't use the PixelExit feature of an extended footer. I personally prefer a clean footer. With DragonByte it is the issue of the length. They...

    Forum Bandwidth

The majority of my site visitors. I think I posted some analytical data about that here already. In fact, the forum itself gets minimal use. EDIT: The data was posted earlier int his thread.... so you can review them and easily see that the majority of tracked visitors do.

On mobile it looks really bad. It's not so bad on desktop.

For entering info... I would have to agree.... but for consuming data... ehhhh... beg to disagree! The problem is finding the folks to generate that data that others want to consume.

    Forum Bandwidth

Not really.. not to a quality level. Yes, it's easy to make a node called Reviews. And even create custom fields for it... but sorry, that is a POOR comparison to RMS. Same way with the Classifed add-on. Or the link directly (can you instruct me on how exactly to make XF check a link and...

Was looking at buying XF site back from friend.. but

Because I am 62 (almost 63) years old and have better things to do with my short time left on this planet like learning more about the aspects of my hobby niche. ;) Which I already do by the approximatley $2000 initial cost and around $800-$1000 a year for renewals that are NOT recouped from...

    Forum Bandwidth

Depends on the niche. Forum->Gallery Forum->Resouces Forum->Articles Forum->Revews Forum->Classifieds The is no golden bullet to answer that question as it is specific to the site and niche.

Was looking at buying XF site back from friend.. but

My issue is.. XF forum (their much praised core) itself is doing bumpkus on my site. What IS carrying most of the load are the 1st and more importantly the 3rd party add-ons (in my case main XenAddons). Xenforo itself really offers nothing to my site. In reality, I would be BETTER served with a...

Was looking at buying XF site back from friend.. but

Had a tickly hair up my ass and since I had some spare cash and high hopes and went ahead and extended out another year to match with some of my add-ons since I knew that bumpkus was going to be done in 2025 no matter what **** the XF developers voice. I personally think a wet paper bag would...

Winner Winner... Chicken Dinner! All the little things add up... folks who do not use many (if any) add-ons don't realize it. Multiple lines (or even links in one line) adds up to crap. Ideally.. there would be a singular link in the XF footer that would redirect to a list of those copyright...

I just hate a bunch of crap being added to the footer. I have seen some that have been 10-12 lines long due to the add-ons they used. In the case of DragonByte.. they could easily clean (and shorten) their copyright up and limit it to one link on page and then the link "details" page that...
