Until forums can advance into the era of 2025 and offer users what they are used to on other platforms.. not gonna happen.
The same "hope" was there with BBS sites when the internet started becoming a thing. Even those BBS scripts that looked forward and offered certain internet access...
That's why I think, especially in the open source arena, Discourse and NodeBB have a higher chance of maintaining relevance since they are constantly updating it and trying to find different boundaries to work towards.
Discourse in several ways offers more than Xenforo, Invision, Woltlab or...
Slow process to innovate or adopt new technology or get timely updates released that bring something to the end users that is now the "norm". When a script developer group (paid or open source) stagnates it impacts the end users of their product.
The fun is how any app will handle add-ons, especially those that are more extensive than just tweaks to the base offering..
I'm sure it can be done, but it would require a close integration and maybe even 1st party add-on to the scripts to provide the core for it.
This IS one of the big issues that I have. And I readily recognize that fact and realize that for others it is a very acceptable solution.
Not everyone has the Linux/Server experience I am blessed with and were not exposed to Linux in it's early release form nor are idiots that pursue those...
Just want to comment.. I really appreciate how you are emphasizing on your site the powers that the Invision script offers.
Granted.. those that choose self-hosting do not have full use of that... but the core site is what all can currently have.
My only big issue (and which you and any others...
Not to brag.. but take a glance at my astro site.. you can see how there are many 3rd party add-ons that can benefit a niche.. and there is even the ability to do so without using a 3rd party add-on but a page node in XF.
Or

Prefixes are the strong point of Xenforo. They are so much better than "tags".
The sad thing is they still remain as not easily discoverable content.
And I make extensive use of them on the astro site.
No, and in fact on the NodeBB sites I help admin and also run there is the option for users to input their real name in addition to a user name. And you can also elect to show the real name as the default.
It's disabled on all the NodeBB sites.
Me, I use my real name. I don't worry about it.
Not saying you were.. but there are those out there that fall into the delicate camp and you have committed a grave sin if you speak negative of a certain script and the report button gets used regularly.
That other site is rather more open as they don't mind the heat being turned up as long as...
If you don't want to have it here.. as long as it doesn't get to off the rails, there are other places that are not so worried about upsetting the certain delicate people.
And they don't worry about being on the outs and endangering a license since they don't use XF on that site. ;)
That's...
Generally a move to a dedicated from a VPS will be an upgrade. There are rare instances where that might not be true... say moving from a VPS that has "real" server level hardware to what amounts to a desktop unit provisioned as a dedicated server (and I see a LOT of those).
That is why you...
I don't think so. People use the free scripts for a reason.. usually because they can't afford to go to a paid script. So if there are no more free offerings, many would most likely just not set up a site using a forum format.
That was one of the things I found so attractive with Invision... before you had to buy their package deal.
I believe Woltlab is the same way, you have a core and then start stacking components on top of it. Some of those might require the forum portion to have certain abilities work.
Discourse and NodeBB are progressive and offer features that some of the paid options have not even contemplated.
Now, if you are referring to older style forums formats that have basically been around since the 2000's then they really don't have a lot of influence on the development process of...
If you like XF and have the money then it's worth it. As a forum offering it remains one of the cheaper ones available and has a renewal policy that is license holder friendly. But this can also be a negative if the developers are not adding features and functions regularly to their script...
I have to agree with @Cpvr. I generally research a hosting provider (VPS or dedicated) heavily before I decide to go with it, and if they happen to get bought out by EIG start quickly looking for another to replace them. EIG=KOD (kiss of death).
