I used a free platform for a long time just because I got used to using it.
I could afford to use a paid script but didn't want to go through the trouble of moving the forum but if I had to, and I loved my forum enough, I'd want to keep it going.
But I'm sure you're right, a lot of people...
I use my real name, my real full name.
I'm fine with it but I think people have the right to be anonymous online and use an alias if they want to.
I would never make it a rule unless I was running a private forum for work or something like that where users needed to use their actual name.
I'm in agreement with you here.
The Invision platform looks good, but XenForo is working for me and my users. I'll likely stick with it and keep upgrading as they release new versions.
But if I ever launch another forum, which I'm trying hard not to do (LOL), I might try out another software...
Yeah, those do pay a lot but they're about as annoying as popups were back in the day.
I experiment with using them on my blogs. I still get a lot of traffic on one of my blogs (300,000+ views a month) where I have it enabled but it makes me feel bad to have it there.
It's almost like enabling...
I used to dislike an active OT section because I felt it took away from the main niche.
However, I'm like you are today. I don't care if that becomes more active than the niche boards anymore. Wherever people want to congregate, it's here for them :)
How active is your hosting service?
Do they just provide a service, support, and that's it?
Or do they have a blog, send newsletters, and are active with their hosting community?
Do they have a forum?
Have any of you ever used the .forum gTLD for a forum?
You could get pretty creative with that gTLD if you wanted to.
For example, Admin.Forum is available for $39.00 on Name Cheap but it renews at $130.00 which is crazy!
My question is: Why would you not use a .forum for a forum site?
What all domain names do you currently have right now?
How many of them will you renew?
I have 60 domain names registered. Out of those 60, I'm only going to be renewing 19 of them. I'm reducing my workload and focusing on what is working. I used to take on too many projects and neglect what...
When it comes to the forum software you use:
1. What's the worst feature or the feature you least care about?
2. What's the best feature that you love the most?
Only choose one for each question and explain your answers! :)
Have you ever tried creating (developing) your own forum software or platform?
For those of you who can program and do it, why don't you make a custom software instead of using one that's already made? You could create your own features and do everything the way you want it to be.
What's...
What all forum software have you tried out in the past?
I've used phpBB1, phpBB2, and phpBB3. I've used SMF 1 and 2. I've used every version of XenForo. I've used vBulletin 3 all the way to 6. I've used MyBB from its earliest all the way to what it is now. I've used a few different versions of...
What would it take for you to use MyBB, SMF, or phpBB as your forum software today?
If you were to consider using these free platforms right now, what would you require to be able to use them?
How often do you conduct post exchanges if you do post exchanges that is/
Do you do continuous post exchanges, or do you do it for a set number of posts?
What has been your longest post exchange?
