Have you heard of AnotherBB?

No? That's because it's not a forum software - yet.

I want to learn PHP. I've been putting it off for years, so now I'm going to sit down and learn it every day (almost every day).

I got a subscription to Code Academy to help me out. I figured since I'm paying for it, that will help motivate me to learn.

I've re-registered AnotherBB.com because it was my forum software project a long time ago, but I never used it.

So, that's my plan.

I'm going to create very simplified forum software and then continue to update it and improve it.

After that, I'll likely release it for free :)

I envision a MyBB meets XenForo-like software. I always liked MyBB as free software, but it never got as modern as XenForo, so I thought both of them could inspire me to make something interesting.

I'll use this topic to update my status until I get a working forum up, and then I'll solely use it after that.

I'm excited about this!

I wish you the best of luck with this.
But I am afraid you won't see the return on it that will make you happy (unless just coding it will do that).
Forum scripts, even free, are less and less "important" in todays internet.
Writing a major forum script from scratch is going to be a definite adventure.
Have you thought about taking something like SMF and forking it, but doing a massive overhaul instead? This may be more work though compared to starting a script from scratch.

I'm mainly just doing it to get good at using PHP. I won't be too upset if the software doesn't catch on.

It's mainly for my own personal learning goal as I've always wanted to make my own forum software. :)

It's nice to be young. At my age, I'm happy to be able to capture a few more hours of the cosmos!
Best of luck. There really needs to a new product brought out that has a dynamic shift in the way "forums" works.
Seems one of the most popular choices continues to be fixed in their archaic position, and another still hasn't mastered that community need.

I'm 40, and I'm not getting any younger, so I'd love to learn it before it gets harder.

Coding a forum has always been a goal, even if nothing happens with it, but with that knowledge, I hope to be able to customize other software.

vBulletin, for example, needs modifications. I might eventually be able to make some of them.

Who knows what it will evolve to, as well?

I love blogging as much. Maybe I'll try to create a new blog platform since Matt is ruining WP. :P

That's great. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
It will probably be a mess at first.

I probably need to install a development test bed on my computer to make it at first.

Yeah, I have almost a 1/4 century on you. 👴
And yes, do this type of stuff when you are younger. Generally the older you get, the less you want to delve deep into many new things. That's like I have some nice DSLR equipment, but I just can't bring myself to get to deeply into it for terrestrial landscape photography. Keeping up with the cosmos version is challenging enough. o_O

Learning a new skill set, even if it does not result in what you want it to is always a benefit.

Learning DSLRs is also on my to-do list. Right now, I use mine in auto-mode.

So do I... and it really bit me in the ass recently when we had the Northern lights visible here in East Texas (an fairly rare occurrence). Got decent on my cell phone, but to do it on the camera you really had to be able to adjust all the manual settings.

We had them here a few times this year in Southern Illinois.

I used my iPhone LOL. Not bad pics but you and me both know, SLR would had been better had I knew what to do. LOL.

A good friend of mine over here does astro. You should check his stuff out: Grant Twiss Outdoor Photography

He's got some great landscape photography. I see he also apparently has a at least one telescope and does some astrophotography.

As for phone images... modern phones are great for day photography, but for night stills you have to have very steady hands... which is rather hard as you get older!
I guess I probably need to get a mount setup for my iPhone as if I had that, this image would have been much better. As it was, since I couldn't get the DSLR to play well I had to fall back to hand held phone.

I think he does it all with a camera and computer. He explained it to me one day, but I forgot most of it. I know it takes a while to do it.

He also takes good photos of this crazy guy who likes to get close to waterfalls (me lol) Log into Facebook
