Big Board Moderation Issues

Are bigger forums losing their edge because of over-moderation?

Or is it necessary to maintain quality conversations?

On the other hand I’ve also seen insults thrown at each other with staff not having the time to get involved in nonsense. Whereas smaller forums tend to be friendlier as you can warn users about personal attacks more quickly.

On big boards they only act on patterns rather than isolated incidents, which is unfortunate because oftentimes a member with different views from the majority is targeted by bullies and the targeted member is seen to be the problem member “causing the disruption”.

The most drama I've seen on forums is typically on a big board.

On the huge IPTV forum I visit over moderation is killing it. A user comes in a posts a question about TiviMate. The overzealous mod moves it to an old thread that is a couple hundred pages long. The post gets lost. In the process the site loses that user. The owner doesn't seem to care. Many long standing members have stopped posting because of the moderation. I haven't posted there in almost a year. Last time I did I questioned why he was doing what he was doing. I got warned and post removed.

Tactics like that will kill any forum.
