If you couldn't use WordPress for whatever reason, what CMS alternative would you choose for blogging and having a website?
 
I am looking for a lightweight CMS that is good looking as well. Without database will be a big plus. Couldn't single out one though.

A databaseless CMS would likely be faster right? Less requests?
 
Yes, it is ideal for many use cases. Most that I found have a horrible layout.
Many are not very user-friendly on the backend, from my experience.

Joomla was hard to use.

I found Drupal confusing, too.
 
Drupal improved a lot in the last couple of years. But I think they are now Composer only. You will need command line access to install it. That's what it was when I last checked.
 
I've heard of Ghost but not Hugo. Tell me more about Hugo?
