Forum Gamification Features

Is gamification (badges, ranks, leaderboards) a gimmick, or does it really boost forum engagement?

I think they used to. I'm not so sure anymore. On my programming forums users use to strive to get a rank of expert or guru. Those ranks weren't just given to anyone. They had to earn it and then get approval of the other experts and gurus. They were all voted in.

Now I don't see that in users. Too much work I guess.

I might look at a way to give custom ranks to folks on my VB forum.

I like post title gamification. Make a bunch of interesting titles. Don't tell what they are. Let people find out by earning them.
