My theory:
As long as we have the internet (and remain human), forums will continue to exist. It's human nature for people with similar interests to come together in communities.
Do you think they will change much? Look and feel? Self-hosted versus cloud? Etc.

There would be both. Example: Amazon became the king on eCommerce, but there also other online stores that are not on Amazon.
I don't believe it's all or none. The real question is that if in 50 years, we will still have internet? (or as freely used as of today)

50 years is a lot… honestly have no idea, but forums won’t exist anymore I reckon.

I know I sound like a broken record. I do believe this to be true.

For forums to survive they will need to adapt. Meaning the linear style has to go. People want things fast. Drilling down through forums and sub-sorums to get the info will be the death of them. Forum search is inherently bad. Always has been. I use Google to search forums for what I am looking for. Site search is useless.

I hope forums survive. Seeing Discourse gain ground and Invision going away for the forum norm give me a feeling that forumd will still be around in 50 years.

I don’t think this is true for many forum users. In fact, what I appreciate about forums is that they’re slower-paced and more organized than social media.

Because of this slower pace and organization, forums allow for long, in-depth discussions on specific topics.
Social media feeds data so quickly that it’s nearly impossible to keep up. The concept of "followers" on social media feels
misleading, as they can’t realistically engage with even 2% of the content shared. So why would I want more information than I can actually digest? That’s why I prefer forums over social media, things move at a pace that suits people like me who enjoy a slower, more thoughtful experience.

About design? the simplest the easiest to navigate(just my opinion) what matter most is the content itself, not how the design look.

What I appreciate most is the linear style. I really don’t like endless scroll feeds. I like structure - go into x section to find topics on x subject .

In 50 years, online groups will continue to exist. This could be augmented reality, digital worlds, meta worlds, etc.

But forums, as a specific type of technology (discussion platform), are going to be replaced by better and more graphical modes.

What about books? they have existed for long time, and they still exist despite new technologies
Couldn't current forum type exist by then? (using the book analogy?)

I hate the endless scroll.

That's the worst feature in the world. That feature makes people stay on for long periods. LOL.

I see you moved all the threads into a single forum on one of your former tech forums. Do you intend to do this for all your forums?

I’m not sure this makes it easier to find the info as most will find it via a google search. If anything it’s harder for members to offer their expertise imo, if they can’t easily filter out the sections they feel they’re most qualified to offer help in
