How to turn lurkers into loyal active members – what’s worked for you?

How do you make a forum lurker turn into an active member of your forum?

I try to do it through onboarding. I pester them enough in PM until they start talking back, and then I refocus on relationship building. I create a friendship that encourages them to come back and chat with me more. Then I convert them into forum posting. This usually works well for me.
