Do you remember
It was launched in 2005 and was composed of a 1,000 x 1,000 grid of pixels, offered for ad space at $1 per pixel to help pay for its creator's university degree.

It sold like gangbusters: over $1 million in 5 months!

This was back when the internet was still new & shiny! There was so much bluesky back then it was unreal.

I love that you brought this up.

I've not seen it in a long time.

I remember when the site was active. Of course, I never bought an ad on it haha.

Yeah, here is some more information about it:

The home page consists of a million pixels arranged in a 1000 ร— 1000 pixel grid; the image-based links on it were sold for $1 per pixel in 10 ร— 10 blocks. The purchasers of these pixel blocks provided tiny images to be displayed on them, a URL to which the images were linked, and a slogan to be displayed when hovering a cursor over the link. The aim of the website was to sell all the pixels in the image, thus generating a million dollars of income for the creator.

The website is also still live!

I clicked on a few of them and mainly got parked pages and a few security alerts from my firewall. LOL.

The guy that thought of that was a marketing genius. There were many knockoffs. Someone even made a script to create your own. Like every fad the first is always the best.
I've considered making one for forums just for fun!

I agree. There was a lot of copycats back then. In fact, A new knockoff version was just recently launched.

One could take advantage of this model.

Offer a basic plan - $XX for a spot for the banner you provide.

or...

$XXX for a spot and we will create the banner

Banners that small can be difficult to make.

If you have AI integrated where you can allow the customer to make it with that (as a paid upgrade of course), that would also be helpful.

I have seen every page, forum or unusual nft be bought for exorbitant prices that nothing surprises me anymore, I honestly would not pay a home page for that price, I don't think it's worth it, but hey, everyone does what they want with your money right?

You might not but a million others did do it haha.

So, it's still a pretty good idea :P

If there wasn't good copycat, it means the project wasn't successful to start with. I'm surprised it's still alive all these years.

Yeah, I had the same experience clicking on some of them as expected. Never joke with your online security.
