This is for forum and blog admins:

What plugin do you use now that you should have used from the start/

Is there such an awesome plugin out there that it should be an out-of-the-box feature on whatever forum or blog software you're using?

Xon's ElasticSearch Essentials add-on that extends the abilities of the Xenforo ES 1st party ElasticSearch add-on. The EleasticSearch Essentials add-on brings features that should have been included in the paid 1st party add-on offered by Xenforo. And that's probably why the developer named it what they did. He has several other Essentials add-ons that extend the very basic offerings from the default Xenforo to what they also should have been.

Do you think ES is better when you have a bigger forum, or should someone like me use it? And why?

It is generally targeted for larger forums, but it did do a better search offering. With the alleged "improvements" that Xenforo was supposedly doing to the mySQL search, it may not be as important for smaller sites that used needed it like I did now. I needed better 2/3 letter word searches due to the niche that I am involved in. For general discussion sites it is probably not as needed until you get into a large number of posts (millions). But with niche terms like IC 1405or M1 it was really needed for me without having to jump through hoops to get the default mySQL search to work with 2/3 letters, and it still being a crappy search (at the time).

I remember that now.

I'm not sure if I'd really need it that much to justify the cost. For now, at least.

Most sites don't. And if the XF mySQL search changes work it would probably suffice for most general discussion sites. Since I've been using ES for years I honestly have not kept up with the mySQL search changes that closely.
