I remember doing this on Reddit with my old forum. Typically if there was a post looking for information on a topic that I know a thread on my forum would very well answer, then I would comment with it. This worked out well.

I try to make it a habit to make sure the site works on mobile first before going on to desktop. Making sure images aren't taking too long to load and not using a lot of JavaScript are some of the things I focus on.
I think so. There have been times when I've had trouble trying to find things on a site and just getting frustrated and going through Google to find it.
I don't have a lot going on my blog so I think the navigation is straight-forward. But I definitely welcome feedback on it and change if needed.

Unfortunately I did take my forum as a hobby and couldn't handle it's growth. I immediately went to an exit plan like you mentioned where another staff member eventually took over.
