I have in the past used jCink, ProBoard and Forumotion for a free forum and out of all of those, I found jCink the better option at least for me to use.
I find free forum hosting perfect for hobby forums.
I always used to forget to backup my forum and it used to annoy me a lot as I could at any point have an issue with my forum and then I wouldn't have a recent backup.
I aim for once a week at least now to be sure I have one.
For the most part I tend to advertise on promotion forums as I have always been wary about using Quora and Reddit as I don't want to look like a spammer.
I had forgotten about Pinterest so that is one I am going to look at again! :)
This is a great list! I always worry about advertising on Reddit because I don't want to look like a spammer. It would be great to hear tips on how to advertise successfully from others.
I firmly believe that politics is one of the top reasons there is drama on forums. Of course, everyone is going to have a different opinion and we should respect that but you do get some that have the attitude of "if you don't agree with me you are wrong" and that is where the drama starts.
I have no issues with necro posting myself as long as the old thread that was posted in offers engagement and is still relevant at the time. In some cases, you can strike up engagement again by resurfacing old threads and I do like that.
As a British person I love tea, so much so I could drink so much per day but I know that is not good for me at all. I tend to drink the basic tea and have in the past drunk fruity-flavoured teas as well.
At the moment I do not have a personal blog but it is something I have looked into and considered in the past. I love to write and know that a personal blog would give me a lot to write about.
I am always someone who prefers to try before I buy or jump into a subscription option if they offer one. I have been looking into vBulletin of late and have been interested in their cloud option but have not been able to see if they offer a trial or even a try before you buy.
Does vBulletin...
At the moment all forums I manage are on Xenforo but I have been looking into vBulletin as I have seen a few forums using that software and do like the layout of the software now. I remember I stopped using vBulletin when they went from 3 to 4 as I didn't like how things have changed.
There have been many cases in which I have gone to purchase a domain and the .com is not available. I tend to be a little disappointed but if I am unable to get the .com I will go for either .net or .org if I need to, in some cases I will brainstorm a new name if I can't get the .net or .com as...
Paying members is not something I have done in the past but I know of some forums that have done and it seems to work out quite well for them. I do know that you have to be careful when paying members and in how you do it because in some cases, you can lose the engagement if members instead...
So far today, to promote my forums I have posted updates to promotion forums for them and have also been active on forums with the link in my signature. Have found some new places to promote too which is always great!
I can't say that I have ever had a member that was banned threaten to sue me, they had a few choice words when they found out about the ban but nothing overly serious.
I would imagine some have gone through it though, you do tend to get some people who take it a little too far with the threats.
This is a great list, some of which are not as active now but still contain a lot of advice and information for sure!
I do feel as though we are lacking in forums that help forum owners but it is nice to still have some that are active.
