How Do You Know When It’s Time to Add (or Remove) a Section?

Do you wait until your membership demands it, or do you wait until you see more of a specific topic or a lack of existing topics?

How do you go about this?

Personally, I don't think I'd have to wait for a member to demand for me to add or remove a section. As long as I'm actively engaging in the forum discussion, I'll see when new topics being made need to have their own designated section and do the needful immediately.

I like to keep it small at first and even dwindle it down further as we go but occasionally, I will ask for feedback to see what everyone thinks and if they have new suggestions.

Asking for feedback isn't bad at all because before that's carried out, you've already noticed some things which clarity is needed on. It helps everyone to feel carried along in what's happening in the community.

I would rather observe the patterns of discussion on the forum to determine if I would add a particular section to the forum. If there are many discussions aligned to a particular aspect lately, it is definitely a signal for me that the forum needs a specialized section for that niche.

There are some forum owners I've seen that are not very active. They hardly notice such things unless their attention is brought to it. This is why I appreciate forum owners who are very much invested to figure out what's needed as quickly as possible and do the needful.

I believe what would work better here is to check the type of topics users create. That will act as a guide towards deciding the new sections that need to be created within the forum.

From past experience, I usually noticed when it was time to add a section if some certain topics started showing up often in different places. It helps keep things organized and easier for members to follow.

Removing sections also makes sense when they are no longer active. Watching how people use the forum usually gives the best direction to know what and how to go about the section.

I feel a forum admin should watch the line that the conversation is headed. If there are many conversations in a particular area that seems to overlap from the sections that already exists in the forum, it might be a sign. A poll should be conducted for members of the forum to decide on the new section.

As a forum owner that is always thinking of expanding the forum, I always add new sub-sections to my forum based on how the discussions go. I have an agricultural discussion forum. I didn't have a fishery and aquaculture section on the forum, but I saw how members were making valuable contributions on fisheries in other topics, I knew that having a fishery section is necessary.
