On my tech forum there is a long standing game of rhyme with the word above you. Also a long standing joke thread.
When things are slow those kinds of posts can be fun.
Back in the days of vbulletin there was a skin site called completevb. They made some of the best skins I ever seen. Those types of designs weren't practical. Too flashy for most users. They were very appealing though.

Visitors want the information they seek yesterday. everything is done at a fast pace. waiting for a portal to open before you get to the meat drives people away.
Didn't use to be that way. In days of old you had to have a portal to give users a look at what was inside.
I know I sound like a broken record. I do believe this to be true.
For forums to survive they will need to adapt. Meaning the linear style has to go. People want things fast. Drilling down through forums and sub-sorums to get the info will be the death of them. Forum search is inherently bad...
I used to charge $75 an hour to manage Windows Servers. That was 20 years ago. Managing them meant I kept the sql, exchange, web and ldap servers all online and functioning. It was a 24/7 job at times.
I don't know what the rate would be now a days.
