Two of the biggest... decent content discovery and the ability of the end user to customize their "new content" feed page.
The design of Xenforo silos so much content off from each other.
That's like I might have a discussion area involving an item, then an article (a separate add-on) that goes...
hehehehe.
I take it a step further for my niche. In addition to a light and dark version... I offer a special one. Night vision. Mainly red/black and the prefixes tags have been toned down quite a bit. Need to do some tweaking on it as I noticed that the last upgrade messed a few things up.
Winner Winner... chicken dinner!
The issue is that the license holders that do care are too scared to speak out. There are about 6-8 heavy duty fan-boys over there that will do their best to trash anyone that complains and if they can't give honest answers about issues reported/improvements...
Personally I find that the new Invision flows much better than XenForo in many aspects. And to top it off.. he has a whole suite of products to offer to his members instead of trying to piecemeal stuff together like you have to with XenForo.
If it wasn't for Bob's add-ons that I depend on...
The answer is "yes".
You offer both to your users.. either on a selectable basis or following their device settings. With XenForo (and several others) it is really not that hard to do now.
For me, in my niche... using the system default is nicer as if it is bright out, I really don't want to be...
For my main interest sites... FarceBook and most of the other social based sites cannot offer what I can from my script.
And I do realize I am the weird bird of the group. I really don't care if I get users joining and participating or not. Yes, it would be nice, but my site was originally set...
The alternative XF help site that I listed was running on SMF when another admin took over control of it as I did not have the time to do more than server/system admin duties. Moved it over to NodeBB after nobody really gave any negative feedback and I like it. But I am now looking at setting...
If it does not break the rules... like in real life... no violation occurs so no penalty should be applied.
If the admin does not appreciate the closeness that the bending was done, they can easily modify the rules to encompass that aspect.
Avatars are avatars. They've been around forever and I really do not think they distract, unless they are those dreaded animated ones (and when I find users on my site using them they get quickly removed). They also tend to make users posts quickly found, more-so than looking (and trying to...
The original philosophy of TapaTalk (and ForumRunner) was great for sites that were primarily discussion based. A centralized application that would allow you to access and interact with sites across the internet from one interface.
The issue came into play for sites that offered more than just...
For me.. currently Discourse. I like NodeBB, but for some reason I am really starting to like Discourse for a discussion community.
When you compare either NodeBB or Discourse to Xenforo, Woltlab, Invision or vBulletin you quickly see how stuck in the "oldy/golden" age they are compared to...
The two I am liking most are NodeBB and Discourse.
NodeBB:
Xenforo Help
Ideology Central
Chrono Collectors
Redneck Host
Discourse:
Edge & Steel
The thing I like about NodeBBS.. it is VERY easy to run multiple nodes of it on one VPS/server instance (it does not use PHP so most shared hosting...
Generally XF (and most decent scripts) already utilize the necessary indexes.
As for anytime you "tweak/touch" your database... you BETTER back it before you do. And I even suggest taking the site offline so that the DB cannot be written to during the time you may be tweaking it.
I personally...
It really depends on what the purpose of your site is.
Yes, I would LOVE for more to interact on my site. But I realized quickly that I was also designing it to be a resource for content and files for those in the niche... and that many (in fact most) of those utilizing that content would never...
MariaDB has been my go-to for years. Before that I used Percona. Main reason I use MariaDB now is for my PHP site installs I've settled on CentMin Mod since it has been very stable for me for years.
That's why I use a link directory add-on now but niche related for vendors, forums and such similar to what is in use here.
I never found a lot of use for those sites that had them. I find a directory structure friendlier.
I use it for my personal email on a domain we have had over 22 years.. but honestly, for use with transactional email it costs more than it is worth.
I would not say it is the "best" way... but it is more easily configured.
I prefer to use either SES (for my primary site and was a REAL pain in...
