The attitude on a support site can kill peoples desire to participate, thereby reducing the odds of them going to the site for support. That can result in someone not liking the script eventually. A friend of mine is in that exact position.
Do you mean serving the site so it shows as a different domain in the browser address bar?
Or do you mean having multiple domain names that resolve back to a master domain name via rewrites?
My Astro site answers on astrowhat.com, astrowhat.net and astrowhat.org. It used to do the same for...
And what of sites that have no desire to obtain revenue from wha they offer the public?
The AI BS is killing them also. And honestly, I'm pretty sure there are a lot more of them than "give us money" type sites.
It's hard to now find decent names that are short and descriptive in the COM/NET/ORG TLD's.
So yes, I am happy with my primary site and even some of my other sites I spun up to just mess with different scripts.
I really need to do more on my Chrono Collectors site as watches and clocks seem to...
I don't know if I would go that far. But some scripts have their core sycophants that will defend their choice poison until they are blue in the face, even which confronted with facts that negate their position.
They seem to take personal offense if you say anything negative about their chosen...
I think some may be under the misunderstanding that I "hate" SaaS. I do not. There is a time and a place for it... for some people.
For me, that time and place will have to be WAY down the road when I reach the point that I cannot do it myself - and by that time I probably won't care about the...
That's why I said "each to their own".
What works for me does not necessarily work for others. I would not expect someone that was brand new to Linux to administer a VPS/server. But I don't see the issue for someone that has been working with it since Linus released his first public kernel...
Yah... just tonight in that "plenty of time" I set up 6 MeLe's for a local company, trouble shot tracking issues on two of my astro rigs and worked on 2 articles (not released yet) and 3 reviews as well as replaced the back of the ETX-125EC with a solid aluminum one instead of the plastic to...
Maybe because they can't be "easily combined into one" for a reasonable price (like a large dedicated server running ProxMox or a similar VM solution)?
Discourse, using their supported docker install is a standalone installation. Yes, you can futz around with putting nginx in front as a proxy...
If it is the only site you run...then yes SaaS can be of benefit, especially if you don't want to deal with any of the back end stuff - which I honestly still enjoy doing. My issue is when you have multiple sites. If you are already running a VPS/dedicated server for other sites, why pay for...
My biggest concern.... I prefer to utilize self-hosting. The extra SaaS features are not anything I would need and I already run a few VPS's for sites so server admin is not a big thing to me. But not being reasonably assured that self-hosted will be around awhile is somewhat troubling...
Two of the biggest... decent content discovery and the ability of the end user to customize their "new content" feed page.
The design of Xenforo silos so much content off from each other.
That's like I might have a discussion area involving an item, then an article (a separate add-on) that goes...
hehehehe.
I take it a step further for my niche. In addition to a light and dark version... I offer a special one. Night vision. Mainly red/black and the prefixes tags have been toned down quite a bit. Need to do some tweaking on it as I noticed that the last upgrade messed a few things up.
Winner Winner... chicken dinner!
The issue is that the license holders that do care are too scared to speak out. There are about 6-8 heavy duty fan-boys over there that will do their best to trash anyone that complains and if they can't give honest answers about issues reported/improvements...
Personally I find that the new Invision flows much better than XenForo in many aspects. And to top it off.. he has a whole suite of products to offer to his members instead of trying to piecemeal stuff together like you have to with XenForo.
If it wasn't for Bob's add-ons that I depend on...
The answer is "yes".
You offer both to your users.. either on a selectable basis or following their device settings. With XenForo (and several others) it is really not that hard to do now.
For me, in my niche... using the system default is nicer as if it is bright out, I really don't want to be...
For my main interest sites... FarceBook and most of the other social based sites cannot offer what I can from my script.
And I do realize I am the weird bird of the group. I really don't care if I get users joining and participating or not. Yes, it would be nice, but my site was originally set...
The alternative XF help site that I listed was running on SMF when another admin took over control of it as I did not have the time to do more than server/system admin duties. Moved it over to NodeBB after nobody really gave any negative feedback and I like it. But I am now looking at setting...
