XenFore If you could start over, would you still choose XenForo?

Of course, most don't when your forum grows significantly, anyway. Eventually you'll have to upgrade. I always tell new bloggers, use shared for a little while as long as you have an option to easily upgrade without problems because eventually if you want your blog (or forum) to grow larger...

Forum marketing in the age of short attention spans

I've seen forums that are like that. Unless the post contributes, they usually warn you or even delete it. I think reaction features, like the like button, have replaced short replies. Personally, I don't think that's a good thing. I'd rather see someone say "I like this" or "Thank you" than...

Banning domain names and email domains

Yeah. I'm seeing an influx of Gmail email domain spam accounts as well.

What’s the #1 thing you wish you knew before launching your forum?

You know, I knew of a forum owner that successfully grew a very large forum using ProBoards. His members would pay to remove ads. I believe that was how that feature was setup. But you'll definitely have to spend money in some form or fashion. I think you could use free software but you'll...

Are traditional forums dead in the age of Social and Reddit?

I think Reddit and social media is entirely different than forums, anyhow. Social is where fast viral stuff happens. Reddit is where a lot of trolling happens. Forums are niche communities full of easier to find evergreen content.

Require Real Names Instead of Usernames

Yeah, the internet is supposed to be anonymous. Even though it really isn't for the average person. But we should be able to hide who we are on websites we join but at the same time, I think websites should be able to require real names, even if I don't agree. I can agree simply not to join.

Which one rule would you change if you're a mod for a day in a forum?

I think forums should implement rules that are simply just common sense. I don't like rules that say you'll be penalized if you post too much or don't use the search feature. I think that sort of moderation is the best way to make a forum fail. That would be what I change if those rules were...

How do you make a community feel like home to your audience?

You're definitely right. You have to make to turn your forum into a tribe or a family if you want to create loyalty. You have to befriend and get to know your members. You have to care about your members and your members care about you. I think many forum owners get stuck on just wanting to be...

Is gaming the hardest forum niche out there?

I think you're right. Gaming is a very saturated niche. However, it all depends on the admin and staff motivating members to be active. Gaming is popular enough for a forum about it to become popular, but it's going to take an active forum owners and staff members to get it there. Most gaming...

    Exchange Wanted with General Forum

Once I get grounded a little from some issues I've had, I'll get back to exchanges so for now, I'm declining it, but I'll let you know when I'm back in. Unfortunately, I have a lot of legal things to deal with from the passing of my dad, who would have been 66 today :(

    Is your forum a dictatorship?

I think forums are dictatorships for the most part. However, I just don't think they're evil dictatorships that we're used to hearing about. Agreeing with pretty much what @Tracy replied here.

    Stolen Blog Content

I've had mine stolen. I sent a DMCA to the hosting service and they suspended the website. Crazy enough, it was a Russian webhost, too. Usually, they ignore DMCAs by Americans. But they did what was right.

    Failing at Blogging

You have to quite procrastinating and just publish it :D I used to be like that, as well. If you forget stuff, that means you can write a followup blog later on or even update old content to keep it fresh and evergreen.
