I want to say I remember The Sandman on TAZ having to notify law enforcement over a young member threatening to harm himself. I think officers showed up to their door for a welfare check as well.
If I had the information of a member who threatened that, I would likely try to contact their local...
I've always tried to allow political and controversial discussions on my forums as long as they don't become abusive.
However, you have to stay on top of those topics and do any moderation that is needed. They get pretty heated, and people are super passionate about their political beliefs...
Very very true.
I don't really monetize on forums right now. They're really just a place for me to escape the grind and just enjoy the chat.
But on my blogs, I do make money, and it took around 6 years to make serious money. Serious enough where I pay into taxes now and don't get a refund, but...
I agree with all the above.
I don't think it should be forced. I'm a member on a few forums that do require it. They claim it's an anti-spam thing, but those forums are also very filled with all sorts of rules that IMO takes away from a community building effort.
I do think it's doing better since the move to Invision. I think you made a smart investment there. I've even got a little bit more active on there. It's turning into my favorite admin forum... who am I kidding? It's the best admin forum out there.
I agree.
I think it's a poor thing to do but effectively, it's free speech and that's it. We can't dictate what people think, and we shouldn't.
However, forums are not public outlets. They're privately owned so we [forum owners] can moderate all day long what we don't want on our forums and...
I found this interesting piece on Bluesky today.
It details how you can use AI to fully create an article and then submit it without getting caught and penalized.
As a writer, I wouldn't use this for anything serious (other than to test it out) because I like to create content myself, but I...
Amen to that.
I always try to give people the advice of "give it a year."
Give it a year to break in and turn into something. Register that domain for a year. Pay for that software for a year. Pay your hosting bill for a year.
See where you are at day 366 versus what it was like on day 1.
Yeah, but you're dealing with the internet, man.
While the internet of things is awesome and such a grand tool for the generations that have been able to take advantage of it, being childish on here is almost a "God given right" whether it's a good thing or not.
There is no other platform...
If you're serious, that is a good contingency plan to have. :)
I think we should at least set it up so the next of kin could inform members that the admin has passed away and what the decision is for exiting: keeping it going, selling it, or shutting it down.
In the old days, we just put up a premium membership and filled our forum with ads and sat back and made money.
That was fine until premium memberships got boring and members started using ad blocker technology. Then the money started dropping to a point to where many people don’t see forums...
Do you ever look for domain names that could be used to compete with your blog?
Do you ever buy them to sit on them so others can't register them and compete with you?
Do you think such a practice would be fine or is it unethical?
How do you feel about username changes on your forum?
Do you let members freely change their username at will and with no restrictions? Why or why not?
Is there any reason not to allow username changes?
Should username changes be transparent? Meaning, should they be announced?
