Let's say a new member joins your forum.

You know this new member to be a troublemaker on all other forums they're on. In fact, they usually get banned or cause so much drama that the forum becomes toxic.

What would you do?

Would you let them continue to be a member and just watch them or just cut your losses, ban them, and potentially mitigate a problem later down the road?

The thing that I will do is to let them stay while I observe their attitudes. Most forums have rules and regulations guiding them and I can only act when it is clear that this troublesome person is breaking any of those rules there.

I believe in giving everyone a chance to prove themselves. If a moniker that is known to always be toxic and troublesome in other forums joins my forum, I would give that moniker a clean slate to write their own story on my forum, but as soon as they start that tendency of toxicity, I would ban the moniker.

If I know for a fact such a person never have any regard for the forum rules and regulations he uses, I'll moderate his account on joining. All his posts will be approved before they go public. If any of his pending posts goes against my community standards, I'll DM him and state why such posts will never be approved. If he's not okay with that, he can leave but if he doesn't and keep making such posts, I'll have no choice but to ban his account.

I haven’t been running forums very long to be able to experience this, I never have had any people join just to make troubles, but I get a lot of spammers and handling those spammers is certainly a big trouble.

I would probably keep a close eye on them at first but be ready to step in quickly if they start causing trouble.

Sometimes giving someone a chance works but forums run smoother when problem members are dealt with early before they disrupt the community.
