Have you seen the AI summary features on GMail, Zoom, and even social media?

Basically, it gives you an option to read the summary of what went in a post, email discussion, or meeting.

Do you think such a thing would be beneficial for forum threads?

Why or why not? Does this exist with any software or plugins available?

I’ve been watching how different platforms approach AI summaries, and I think there is some value there, but only in very specific contexts. Invision’s approach, where the system highlights the most “important” replies based on reactions or engagement, is probably the closest thing to useful right now. It gives newcomers a quick on‑ramp into long threads and helps searchers land on the posts that actually contain solutions or meaningful information.

That said, this only really works for Q&A‑style threads or topics where there’s a clear problem/solution structure. Once you move into general discussion, casual chat, or anything where the “point” of the thread is the conversation itself, the usefulness drops off fast. There’s no real dataset to summarize, so the AI ends up forcing structure where none exists.

Full AI‑generated summaries are where I’m the most skeptical. With a small userbase and limited post volume, the model doesn’t have enough context to reliably understand the nuances of a back‑and‑forth conversation. It tends to latch onto the wrong details, miss the actual conclusion, or confidently present something inaccurate as the “main takeaway.” That’s just the nature of AI; it needs massive amounts of data and feedback to be consistently reliable, and most forums simply don’t generate that kind of volume.

So while lightweight “highlight” summaries can be helpful in the right situations, I’m not convinced full AI thread summaries are ready for forums yet. The risk of misinterpretation is still too high, especially in threads that aren’t strictly informational.
