Does allowing anonymous accounts hurt a forum's trustworthiness, or is anonymity essential for open discussions?

Nope. I have anonymous posting turned on. A feature of IPB. I don't use it. It's there for the members.
I've considered enabling it where available. I just don't know what the usefulness is for it. Can you see the member as staff?

I don't think it's a good idea.

Maybe some niches.

Support forums for abuse, depression, etc.

Yes, for some niches it's good. Specially those you mentioned.
I feel like TAZ had this once. People would ask questions they didn't want others to know them by.

I'm not sure if I would add it here or not.

Technically, an anonymous poster can still be banned as their ip is tied to their regular account.🤔
They may post without registering an account. And IP addresses can change. Many members have dynamic IP addresses too.
