Anyone Familiar With Flarum?

Anyone use or admin a Flarum community?

It looks interesting. Sort of like a Discourse clone. Much easier to install from the looks of things. I might spun up a VM and give the installer a try.

What's your thoughts?

I have used a Flarum community as a user but do not have experience using it as a community owner. I think it looks nice.

Uh yeah on setting up... and uh... not again if I have anything to say about it!
Even now it's not really ready for prime time IMHO. The admin of Xenforo Help wanted me to try a test install of it for that site. I did and I won't again! It was OK until a plug-in that was supposed to work for direct upload of images (which is not supported in the base install) did not work. Removed that plug-in and it trashed the install.
There are much better options out there, setting up another VPS and installing Discourse being one of them.
The idea is nice... but it still seems somewhat delicate.
I told Neo that if they wanted to run Flarum to feel free to grab their own VPS and set it up.

How about the initial installation?

It gives instructions on doing it from the command line. What about us FTPers? Is it just like any other forum software, for that matter?

If I remember right, you have to have shell access (SSH) in some manner. In fact, the "normal" way to install plug-ins is via CLI. They do have a GUI that is "supposed" to work, but we never could get it to. And honestly, I did not waste a lot of time on it as the short time it was running it was not something that impressed me. The use of what amounts to tags (or prefixes if you prefer) to label everything and then dumping it all into the same pot to display was cumbersome. Yes, you can filter based upon those tags, but now you are back to doing similar to categories. The biggest issue is you need to understand that if you think your users might be directly uploading images, they won't by default. You can only link to remotely hosted images. And the add-on that was supposed to work (and is older) never did... even after 3 install/config attempts. It showed installed, but the ACP access to configure it never showed up and those permissions could not be found in the user permissions area to grant access... which since the user I was signed in under was the first user and should have all permissions anyway was concerning.
I've played with scripts for a "few" years. And for me to comment that is not one that I am interested in getting punished by again might be telling... considering I like to play with new things! I've even gone so far as to grab a simple VPS to install Discourse on to play with... and decide I didn't like it and shut that VPS down.
If I was going to do anything, I'm grab something like Oracle VirtualBox, install it on my PC and set up a virtual Linux environment and play with it there. I would NOT be tempted to play with it on any system (especially VPS) that I was using live for other sites.
