What do you usually offer for contest prizes?

Do you think money is the best prize?

It depends on the forum but I think everything you decide to use as the contest prize should have the option for the winner to convert it to money if they want.

I've seen forums (Gaming specifically) where they offer video games as the contest prize but the winner can choose to get cash equivalent.

I've tried the money thing time and time again; some even larger amounts and it just doesn't get the participation that makes it worth doing it.

Video game prizes are a good reward for top posters. I’ve seen this prize work well for a lot of communities over the years.

Sometimes the contest needs to be promoted for others to hear about it. Did you promote it in any areas when you launched them?

I remember when I launched posting contests in the past, they did quite well and I got a lot of participation from them. I’m thinking about launching some contests in the Spring or Summer.

The referral subreddit might be a good spot to promote a contest along with the website sub on Reddit along with other forums.
