Do you ever delete blog posts that no longer get any sort of activity?

If yes, why do you do this? Why not update the post and try to revive it?

I definitely wouldn't. I might update it if it needs it but I'd leave it.

I've come across some blog posts through a search that might have helped me with research or solve a problem only to find that it leads to a 404.
Yep.

I say update instead of deleting.

If you must delete, redirect the old URL to a page with a list of other related posts to potentially get the reader to go onto other topics that might help them.

Instead of having an error page, have a page that engages and fosters more readership!
