In blogging, we (bloggers) often offer lead magnets for those who subscribe to the blog or a mailing list.

A lead magnet is something big and free given away to those who subscribe or join something.

It's usually just another way to encourage membership.

I pose the question - can it be effective for forums? Offer an incentive to guest to join?

What do you all think about such an idea?

I believe it's a must. People are really busy with so much content, invitations, and what not.
We need to really call their attention and direct some sort of action with something they really want, otherwise, they just "never saw you"

Also, Branding it's just a major part to attract leads. Branding takes time, way a lot of time before
they consider your offerings (even if you are offering something really good)
And branding is not just showing a logo, but associating the logo/brand with something good, specially if that touches deep feelings.

I've been writing an eBook about forums. I plan to give it away for free as a lead magnet for joining this forum :)

Of course, current members will get it too.

But I'll limit it for a certain amount of time and then only offer it as a paid feature later down the road.

I like this idea very much. I think we can work something out too...
