Yes. One of members who was popular on the forums fell out with the owner and started their own forums. Some members supported both and posted on both, many others chose a side.

I've seen this happen a lot.

I've even been on the end of one of those. Fed up with the forum owner's tactics and started my own forum to compete in the process. I don't have a profit goal, either, so I can give so much stuff away that the competition will charge for which made people favor my community.
