Do you think strict moderation benefits or kills forum growth?

Could you be a member of a forum that uses strict moderation techniques?

I mean, essentially, you'd just have to follow the rules, right?

I know of a forum that uses strict moderation. That approach has rather chased people away from the forum. A very little infraction? Your account is banned without provision for appeal. The forum is clean but people have left it.

If a forum owner keeps acting that way, that means that the forum won't have a lot of members since every little error is met with the account being suspended.

Strict moderation is good in a forum where members are fond of breaking the rules. It's all in the best interest of the community things are done that way. I don't have any problem with it as long as the mods are enforcing the community rules, not what they want.

There is nothing wrong with joining such a forum. However, it is important that the moderator or forum owner knows when to use the rule or not.

I suspect that most of the time, forum owners become strict when members are fond of breaking the rules.
