Notably, MySQL 8.4 has deprecated SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS, a feature heavily utilized in WordPress for pagination. This change may influence developers' choice of database systems. Honestly... MariaDB and their licensing arrangements have resulted in much of this. MySQL got, as my grandfather used to say, "too big for their britches" and thought they had more "impact" on infrastructure than they actually did. A couple of the medical clinics I do work with used software based upon mySQL But with their licensing changes (forcing them to pay) several of the vendor packages migrated to MariaDB.
