Microsoft has begun rolling out updated versions of Paint and Notepad for Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels on Windows 11. These new AI-powered features might not reach all users in the Canary and Dev Channels immediately, as Microsoft plans to gradually expand availability based on early feedback.

Paint (version 11.2410.28.0)

The updated Paint app introduces a “Generative Fill” tool, allowing users to make changes or add elements by typing a description while preserving their project’s art style. To use this, select an area using the Rectangle or Free-form selection tools in the Paint toolbar, then click “Generative Fill” in the pop-up menu. Type the desired addition and select “Create.” If the result isn’t quite right, users can hit “Try again” or browse through generated options with arrows, finally clicking “Keep” to save their choice. This feature is initially available on Snapdragon-powered Copilot+ PCs.

Paint also introduces “Generative Erase” to easily remove unwanted objects. Selecting “Generative Erase” on the canvas while using the eraser tool lets users brush over one or more areas to mark them for removal. Options to “Add area to erase” or “Reduce area to erase” allow for refined selections. After finalizing, click “Apply” to complete the edit. This feature is available for all Windows 11 PCs.

The Paint app update also brings improvements to Cocreator’s diffusion model for faster, enhanced results on Snapdragon-based Copilot+ PCs. Furthermore, Microsoft is expanding its Image Creator preview, previously launched in select regions, to additional countries, now including the United States, France, the UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany.

Notepad (version 11.2410.15.0)

The latest Notepad update introduces an AI-based rewrite tool. This feature allows users to rephrase sentences, adjust the tone, and modify content length. Users simply highlight the text, right-click and select “Rewrite,” or choose “Rewrite” from the menu bar, or use the “Ctrl + I” shortcut. Notepad will then offer three rewrite suggestions, with an option to retry for more variations. This feature is currently available in the United States, France, the UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany. Microsoft also shared that they’ve optimized Notepad’s launch performance, cutting load times by up to 55%.

These AI enhancements in Paint and Notepad make creative and editing tasks more accessible and efficient.
