Let's say you have a member who's been a problem member in the past on a few occasions.

Trolling, minor abuse - got warnings but never banned...

If a staff position came open and they wanted it, would you entertain the idea of promoting them to staff?

If yes, how would you justify such as action?

No way, it’d look pretty bad to have a moderator as a troll. And inconsistent moderation and hypocritical.

Staff should be held to even higher standards than regilar members imo

I agree, personally.

I'd even be unwilling to "give them a chance" based on how they've acted in the past.

It's just like the real world. I'm not going to hire someone who has a reputation of being a jerk to people. Sure, that means they may not succeed in life, but they put themselves in that situation, not me.

What if they were a kid or teenager when they were trolling though?

Ppl grow and change imo

I did promote a problem user. Two in fact. First to Expert, because he was, then moderator and finally admin.

There were 2 large Visual Basic programming forums. John the founder of vbulletin's VB Forum and mine Extreme Visual Basic. We were a tight ship no BS get your problem solved forum. John's was more laid back. The users said if you want real help with visual basic programming go to Extreme VB. If you want to chit chat go to VB Forum.

Every once in a while some of the users would invade us with idle chat. They posted in the correct forum that wasn't the problem. It was the volume and the topic. Staff were busy enough with answering a couple thousand posts a day so didn't want to deal with cleaning the stuff that didn't belong. The admins closed to off topic area. They went back to VB Forum and started a thread about how they forced the primary competitor to shut down a forum.

Two users stayed. At first to disrupt by disagreeing with just about every answer. I talked to them in PM and said they seemed to very knowledgable and thatI'd like them to stay active and try to work with the other experts and gurus. To my surprise they turned into model citizens and eventually were promoted to admin.

Did they demonstrate ownership and growth of their past issues?

Way to combat trolls - “don’t feed the trolls” as they all say 😁

I do think this is a good question to consider.

I mean I do tend to judge a book by its cover, at times.

But if they did admit fault on their part and straightened up at some point, should they be given another chance?

If they are like they were as bullies now, maybe not, not if they improved over time, maybe it just took some maturity.

You wouldn’t give them a chance if they improve over time cuz it took some maturity? Am I reading this correctly?

Also depends if you mean another chance to be a member or a chance as staff

No. I just didn't check my grammar LOL

If they did apologize or mature and improve over time, I WOULD consider promoting them.

Depends on how long it's been since they were caught trolling. I'm a firm believer of second chances, but let's imagine that the troll is recent, then I wouldn't be inclined to promote. Now if the trolling is a thing of the past, let's say a year or more - then that's a possible different outcome.

Second chances are a good thing. People also need a lapse of time to make some changes. If too soon, that person would probably repeat the mistake.
I acted in a childish manner with @Cedric about a year ago, I did apologize and he was cool about it. Thank you man!
