Promotional banners and buttons allow your visitors or users to link back to your forum through their forum signature, personal website, blog, or community. Do you provide promotional banners or buttons on your online community for members to use?

I’ve always been a fan of offering promotional banners, as I believe they’re a great way to attract new members to a community.

What about you? Do you use them?

I've considered it, but forum links are low hanging fruit and could do more damage than good with a ton of forum signatures/forum profile links back to your site.
As long as there’s a mix of backlinks, forum signatures alone shouldn’t do much harm, but they can be low-quality if overused. Profile links can have some benefit since they signal to search engines that you’re the owner of the forum, but they typically don’t carry as much weight as high-quality backlinks from authoritative sites.
The key is to maintain a diverse backlink profile that includes various types of links for a more effective and natural SEO strategy.

That's what I'd worry about if a forum of 500 members did it across all forums they're members of... let's just say 3 each... 1500 backlinks across 500 threads each is 750,000 backlinks. It would get messy really quickly if you could get that many members to participate.

What is 2 people use the same link?

Not all those backlinks would necessarily count. Search engines evaluate links based on relevance and quality, not just quantity. If thousands come from the same URL, many will be ignored or devalued, so sheer volume alone doesn’t guarantee SEO benefit.

If two people use the same link, search engines will still recognize it, but it won’t necessarily double the impact. Search engines typically evaluate factors like relevance, authority, and uniqueness. If the link appears multiple times in similar contexts, it may be devalued or considered redundant rather than providing additional SEO benefits.

That's how I feel signature URLs would be if you could convince a huge number of your members to put your forum in the signature across multiple forums that they're members of.

So, why risk it?

I know the 750,000 backlinks wouldn't count (but you could see them if you used certain tools), so it just looks spammy.

It really depends on the webmaster’s goals. While search engines might not count all those backlinks, they can still generate clicks and visibility. If done naturally and across relevant communities, signature links can be a great way to attract new users. However, overdoing it can come across as spammy and hurt the brand’s reputation.

Do you people buy backlinks? How much is the market rate, for say 1000 quality backlinks? Any recommended seller?

There’s actually a market for those that buy and sell backlinks, but I’ve never purchased any. There’s also a user on adminjunkies and forumpromotion that sells directory backlinks.

I met someone on threads/instagram that sells them though.

Too many links aren't just ignored by search engines, but they often result in penalization.

I wouldn't touch the backlink buying services with a 10-foot pole!
