What have been the most unique ways you have promoted your forum?

Tell us how you've promoted your community outside of what everyone else normally does?

I have used Quora to promote my forum. I answered a question on Quora and left a link to my forum for more information. I did manage to get some traffic through Quora but sadly there were no new registrations.
I've always just used my credentials as a way to promote my forum.

I've never really had a lot of luck with Quora, myself.

One unique way to promote your forum is through Pinterest, but it requires images. You’ll need to upload an image (or “pin”) to their platform, including a link, a description, and relevant hashtags.

So far, I’ve used it to promote two games listed in my directory, and it has generated some visits.

Did any of the extra visitors register?

I have used Pinterest as well. I have got some traffic but sadly none of them registered. You can get traffic from social media but it is very rate for your social media visitors to register in your forum. Social media users are more into visual content like images and videos and forums lack this feature.

I typically get more registrations from social than most things, aside from other related forums.

For the most part I tend to advertise on promotion forums as I have always been wary about using Quora and Reddit as I don't want to look like a spammer.

I had forgotten about Pinterest so that is one I am going to look at again! :)

For me there are only 3 options, the first and the most difficult is the organic way manually, through recommendations between users, between friends, etc. The second is through advertising such as ads in Google Adsense or in YouTube videos. Why? ? and the last one that is the most used is through backlinks on various websites, forums and so on, but of course the latter must be done through professionals, if you don't know about the subject you won't get anywhere, this way You will be able to position the forum at the top of the Google search results and logically you will gain many more active users.

How much do you typically budget for paid advertising?
