phpBB all the way. If I were to start a forum on free software it would be phpBB.

I'm using the software on another forum. It's nice BUT the spam controls aren't the best.

For me it's a tie between SMF and phpBB. MyBB was great around 2014, but unlike the other two, MyBB is still stuck in 2014.

I chose SMF for a few reasons.
SMF has been responsive out of the box since its last update.
But so it phpBB.
However, phpBB seems to be weak in the anti-spam department, and SMF isn't.
SMF is my first pick. phpBB would be my second for sure!
