XenForo versus Discord:

Which is better and why???

If all you want is a simplistic modern discussion forum then I lean towards Discourse.
It is more modern in appearance from a user perspective. Much of the moderation is user trust based. It has a single-page application design, which it appears that the younger crowd likes more than the traditional (read old style) forum format that Xenforo uses. It is also designed more towards real time conversations.

If you want the more old-style structured format then Xenforo would be the choice. If you need extensive add-on functions to extend to more than a forum, then again, Xenforo would be the choice.

Neither one is "better". Like in all things, you pick the right tool for the job.

They are not the same thing as far as I know. Discord isn't a forum, it's more like a chat room/group or chat messenger. They shouldn't be compared to start with.

I've been using Discord lately. It's like a forum. The content stays on there like a forum but it's a little more live like a chat room.

It’s more so aol chatrooms of the early 2000’s. The content being visible is the only thing that makes it like a forum, but it’s a chatroom at its core. It will never be a forum. It’s a remake of aim/msn/skype with new tech.

Xenforo is superior here by far. You out right own everything, you don’t own anything with Discord.
I own as much with my Discord install as I do with my Xenforo install. Both are self hosted.

I'll have to beg to disagree in many aspects.

And this does not look much different than any XF forum I have visited.

And in some ways, it offers more in its built in search than other paid scripts do.

If anything it is a progressive step forward over what the old 2000's forum format consists of. It allows flexibility that is not available in scripts like XF, vB and others that are based upon a the old style forum format.
The biggest weaknesses of it is that it really needs to be ran under Docker, especially if you want any support and the fact it is still set up to be 1 instance - 1 server. You CAN run multiple nodes using nginx as a front end, but when you do that, you lose official support from their forum as it is not a supported process and the developers will generally not assist in answering questions pertaining to that setup. Also the add-on arena is not as well rounded, generally being only things that enhance the script and no add-ons like the stuff from XenAddons and similar.

Discord wants to be the modern-day AOL Instant Messenger

As engagement across social media wanes, Discord is designing its platform to be more welcoming to first-time users.

Which is exactly what Discord did, they reinvented the wheel of chatrooms. They took the aim/msn concept and improved it. Their developers even thanked “skype” for paving the way for them in the past.

If you want a full fledged chatroom, discord is the way to go. If you want a private chatroom, not public viewable, discord is the way to go.

The search engines don’t crawl nor index discord servers, they are private by designed. They’re officially killing forums that use them. Especially Gaia online and more. They’re not forums.

Where would Discord be today if it wasn’t for AIM, aol, msn, and skype? It wouldn’t exist. Their developers designed it for chatting, voice messaging to be like those platforms, not like a forum.

I use discord as well for quick chatting, but that’s about it.

Brain fart on my part... I am referring to Discourse.
Only excuse.. been fighting a stomach bug for about a week and my attention span is not on much more than the toilet.

As for Discord. Don't use it as I have no need for group chat functions. My business is taken care of via email or SMS/iMessage.

Oh my, I hope you feel better soon bro! The discourse features do look good overral. I'm apart of another of another forum that uses it. They have a reputation system in place that's based upon posts/likes. It's an interesting feature as certain core functions don't unlock unless you have good reputation by being active as well. I wish Xenforo had a system like that.

Thanks. This is the first "bug" I've had in over a decade... and it has NOT been fun. :poop:

Yah... Discourse is a solid competitor to Xenforo for a forum based offering.
Discord... have zero use for it personally but I know some support sites that prefer to use it for developer conversations (I've been invited to a few even though the XF developers would probably prefer that I be avoided like syphilis with any 3rd party development related to their script). :ROFLMAO:
But from what I see, Discord is NO competitor to any forum based offering. They are two entirely different product lines.

I've been fighting some crazy headaches myself.

I'm a little worried because I pulled an attached lonestar tick from me. So far, meat isn't making me break out into hives yet!

That's one thing that really worries me now. I like rib-eye too much to get AGS. And living in Texas.. this is one of the most common ticks in our area.
