My story was simple.
I was creating static HTML pages with WebTV of all things. A friend I met through that realm (who had a PC) said he could setup a forum for me. It was one of the older threaded versions (discussion list) type.
After I got my first computer shortly after that, I installed phpBB v1 and then went to v2 as they had just released it.
The rest is history.
