I asked about members under the age of 18. Some of us don't allow it while others do allow it.

So, for those of you who do allow it: Do you also allow under 18 members to be staff members on your forum?

I've heard some forum owners who wouldn't allow it because of the maturity level of teenagers in handling difficult situations. Would you agree or disagree?

I'd love to see what everyone thinks about this issue!

It's like shooting yourself in the leg having an 18 years to even be your staff member and not to talk about someone under 18. Yes, an 18 year old is categorically an adult but their reasoning and level of human management is still very under developed which is why I can't risk it with them. I'll have my staff members from at least 25 years up.

25? Interesting.

Why 25 and up?

My personal observation is that someone who's very serious with being useful in his or her life would have matured very well and mentally at the age of 25 years up. I wouldn't entrust anything serious to someone below the age of 25 for any reason whatsoever.

Interesting.

I almost see anyone under 35 as being kids these days.

Just because 20-something years old today act entirely different than the 20-something year olds of the past.

Most of them don't move out of the parents' house until they're pushing 30.

You're not the only one who feels the same about working someone within age range of 35 years upwards. A friend of mine runs a car wash company and never employed anyone below 35 years because he doesn't want to have anyone who wouldn't understand what they are doing when it comes to handling client's cars that's worth thousands of dollars.

This modern generation today find it very difficult to moved out of their parents houses quickly. I started living on my own at the age of 22 years.

They're definitely different that what they were years ago.

Not all young people but a lot of them.

I understand why people are careful about this. Allowing under 18 members is fine but making them staff really depends on the person. Some teenagers handle things well, others struggle with difficult situations. So for me, it’s not just about age, it’s about how responsible and mature the individual actually is.

Many forums owners today don't allow users under the age of 18 years to register because it's easier to deal with privacy issues with adults. Why then would a users under 18 be allowed to register and become a staff member? It doesn't add up. I would never allow such because it's bad for a forum's health.

Back when I was younger, it was common to see under 18 folks on forums and as moderators.

Nowadays, not so much.

But I wonder if they're still out there at all...

I'm not sure if there's any serious business establishment which employs anyone under the age of 18 to work for them. The same thing should be applicable on forums too when hiring staffs. They should leave kids out of potential candidates to hire.

I have had staff under 18 successfully moderating my social communities, but I never hire anyone under 18 for indie forums. The risk of targeted abuse, especially mental and emotional harassment from adults, is simply too high in smaller, less-monitored spaces.
