In most cases, forum staff is expected to be volunteer. I mean that is how it has always been traditionally. But if I was making enough money on a forum to profit (after bills), I'd consider paying staff members.
I think Elon wanted X so people can act the way they do on there without worry.

I could be all for credit systems where you pay for signature links through credits you earn by posting. That might be applicable to gamify that feature.

I feel the same way and most of my blogs are very personal to me and the brand is me so selling them would mean selling me.
I'll never sign a non-compete so I'll never get bigger profits because of that.
I'd rather monetize the blog than sell it.
