Toxic and controversial are two different things. Most of the topics on forums that we think are toxic are just controversial. And I allow controversial topics. But when a topic is borderline toxic, I delete it immediately.
I am one person that can't pinpoint anyone and call that person my personal friend. Anyone that is around me, there is something of interest that we share that makes us around each other. I don't have a single friend that can come look for me at home.
Paid upgrade by members is the monetization method that has earned me the most money. Running a fictional story blog, I lock the peak part of my stories, and my useless have to upgrade to their membership to premium to access the peak part of the stories. And they actually pay for it.

You would not get real people that would stay in the forum if you use an influencer to promote your forum. I don't think promoting a forum with with social media influencer is worth it.
Paying members for posts is not bad. The thing is that most people are just concerned about the incentive and don't bother about offering value to the forum.
From the forums that I am a member on, it is more males that are found there. I think the subject matter of modem forums resonate more with men than women.
I think paid posting would help to boost activities on a forum if it is a new forum. I don't really have an issue with that. I have been offering paid posting services and I always try my best to offer value to forums that pay me.
