    Dedicated

At $16 a month unmanaged. You can figure on an average of around $50-$70 a month for quality management, and if you don't want to use cPanel, good luck finding someone that does it. ;) And yes, I've managed all my VPS/dedicated serve instances since I started having sites on the internet...

    Dedicated

My astro site is currently running on an OVH KimSufi dedicated server. Hardware was above what I could get in a VPS for the same price, and since I have regular backups if the older hardware totally bites the bullet I am out no more than 24 hours of posts.... unless it craps out during the...

    Updating PHP

I recently was involved in a convo with a person who runs a site. Their hosting provider "upgraded" them to PHP 8.4. And since they are running an older version of Xenforo 2.2 it took a massive crap on itself. The biggest issue... the hosting provider should not have taken it upon themselves...

MariaDB now powers 51.54% of WordPress sites, overtaking MySQL's 47.88%

Honestly... MariaDB and their licensing arrangements have resulted in much of this. MySQL got, as my grandfather used to say, "too big for their britches" and thought they had more "impact" on infrastructure than they actually did. A couple of the medical clinics I do work with used software...

    XenForo versus Discord

That's one thing that really worries me now. I like rib-eye too much to get AGS. And living in Texas.. this is one of the most common ticks in our area.

    XenForo versus Discord

Thanks. This is the first "bug" I've had in over a decade... and it has NOT been fun. :poop: Yah... Discourse is a solid competitor to Xenforo for a forum based offering. Discord... have zero use for it personally but I know some support sites that prefer to use it for developer conversations...

    Members Online

I was getting a LOT of bots scanning for Wordpress related links and such from several Chinese IP's. I have a lengthy CF list of ASN's that are challenged and then a decent list of partial URL's that are actually blocked as they have no bearing on anything served from the sites I use them on...

    XenForo versus Discord

Brain fart on my part... I am referring to Discourse. Only excuse.. been fighting a stomach bug for about a week and my attention span is not on much more than the toilet. As for Discord. Don't use it as I have no need for group chat functions. My business is taken care of via email or...

    XenForo versus Discord

I own as much with my Discord install as I do with my Xenforo install. Both are self hosted. I'll have to beg to disagree in many aspects. And this does not look much different than any XF forum I have visited. And in some ways, it offers more in its built in search than other paid...

    XenForo versus Discord

If all you want is a simplistic modern discussion forum then I lean towards Discourse. It is more modern in appearance from a user perspective. Much of the moderation is user trust based. It has a single-page application design, which it appears that the younger crowd likes more than the...

    Custom Emojis, Icons, Etc.

I no longer use any custom ones. The main reason if you migrate software, they don't generally follow along. Also, it's a lot easier to use the built in emoji, especially for those that use the Unicode Standard as they translate across most all devices.

Google: Not all sites will fully recover with future core algorithm updates

Ehhh... I'm happy. Folks are still using the site to find resources pertinent to the niche and coming by. And that's what I set the site up for. There was a decline around the first of March. And I don't really push it on other sites.. but apparently it does get a few organic backlinks...

    Members Online

Just the other day. I had 5,287 guests online. Of course, almost every one of them was hitting the style variation link that Xenforo seems to be prone to bots hitting. Gives me something to do by using managed challenges for certain ASN's.

    Backing up your host

How many times have you tested the validity of the backup they provide?

    Backing up your host

I don't trust services provided by hosting providers. Ergo why I run a script that allows me 7 day rolling backups. I could easily increase that, but generally I have found if I have not noticed an issue in 7 days... that's my problem. So far (knock on wood) that has not bit me. I've posted...

    EU Internet Laws

I think the way the law was written kind of eliminated that "out" that was there. It did not matter where the server was based, but more the owner of it. For someone like me in the US, I don't have to worry about it. And no, there were some pretty popular sites shutting down...

    EU Internet Laws

I know that there have been several sites in the UK that are shutting down due to the Online Safety Act that went into became law recently.

    Most Money Spent?

With the servers I had, I had 32 IPv4 addresses for each of them. Was not that much more at that time. All the servers I had at that time I ran ProxMox on. And the biggest one I had a dedicated (for my main VPS) set up for 12vCPU. During that time I was would only grab a dual CPU based...

    Most Money Spent?

I've used several over the years. When I was running the largest server I have provisioned it was with a company out of Dallas. Don't remember the name of it now but I do know that their quality has dropped and remember reading someone having issues with them drafting funds after a server was...

    Is free forum software dying?

I would not say "better plug-ins". But for a "simple forum script" which many XenForo cult members keep yelling that XF is, it does offer a viable and more modernistic take on a forum site. Many add-ons that are are considered as "needed" are available for it. One that is that XenForo...
